University of North Dakota name change

This really pisses me off. I'm so sick and tired of all this political correctness bullshit that goes on in our crazy country. The latest irritation is the idiots at the University of North Dakota that voted 8-0 to eliminate the name Fighting Sioux from the school.

Here's the email I sent to some Vice President stooge at UND:

Hello,

Simply put, this political correctness has gone too far. Ralph is rolling in his grave. What an absolute joke that the name is being changed. The people who voted to change it should be ashamed of themselves as well as the university for going along with this nonsense. From what I understand, Fighting Sioux means fighting snake. How is that possibly offensive in any way. The university is completely in the wrong for giving into the peer pressure of a small group of anti Indian name buffoons. Do the right thing, go with what the vast majority actually want, and keep the name the Fighting Sioux.

Obviously this is not a scientific poll, but this poll is currently on Star Tribune's web site, the results are what they are, which is a very upset, irritated fan base and group of casual observers:

Instant poll: Do you favor dropping the Fighting Sioux name, logo?

Awards, surgery, GM

Vezina finalists came out and Nik Backstrom is one of them, and he should be. He was the only goalie in the top 5 in all goalie stats this year. The award should be his regardless if he wins it or not. Other 2 are Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tim Thomas of the East winning Boston Bruins.

Selke finalists came out and Mikko Koivu was missing. Nothing against Pavel Datsyuk or Mike Richards, 2 of the 3 finalists, but Mikko and Ryan Kesler, the 3rd finalist, are the 2 best defensive forwards in the NHL. Without Mikko's tremendous 2 way play, along with Backstrom's great goaltending, the Wild don't even get close to the playoffs. Mikko is one of the best captains in hockey, one of the best 2 way forwards in hockey, and one of the most under appreciated players in hockey due to be on a terrible team almost nobody outside of Minnesota cares about.

On the surgery front, Backstrom got hip surgery a few days ago, and the doc said it was cleaner then he thought it would be. Nik's recovery time will be much shorter then the 6 months initially thought.

Also getting surgery was Marc-Andre Bergeron. Marc had back surgery for what was called a "disc issue." Rehabilitation is expected to be 6-8 weeks.

Finally, on to the GM situation. I want for Toronto Maple Leafs GM Pat Quinn or former Tampa Bay Lightning, current Sportsnet broadcaster, Jay Feaster. Anyone else other then those 2 is doing a great disservice to the franchise and Wild fans. Also, I know the new GM will get to choose his own coach, but there is nobody I'd rather see behind the bench next year then tthe wrongly fired, ex Chicago Blackhawks coach Denis Savard. He works well with youth and is an excellent coach. He would fit in perfectly with the Wild youth.

Doug is Fired !!

In case you didn't know, Doug Risebrough got something that was 3 years over due, and that would be a pink slip for being an incompetent jackass that was incapable of making the Wild a Cup contender.

Lemaire resigns

It's about time. Lemaire had worn out his welcome the season before the lockout and stuck around a few seasons too long. Uunder Lemaire, the Wild had some success, but too much defense, and a lack of offense killed the team. It also didn't help that the Wild have the worst GM in the league and Lemaire wasn't provided the talent to succeed.

Look for Lemaire to take the head coaching job in Montreal next year.

I just hope the Wild get a good coach and not some puppet Doug can control. The Wild have far too many yes men and not enough people that think outside the box. In fact, the only person that really had a clue in that front office since the Wild started was ex Wild president Tod Leiweke.

Don Cherry/Trade Deadline

You know, the old saying rings true, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Unfortunately, some people's opinions are ridiculously stupid and should be kept to themselves like the old, senile, moronic Don Cherry of CBC in Canada. This fool actually ripped Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin for his post goal celebrations. This fool actually said "it wasn't Canadian." What kind of ridiculous statement is that? Don Cherry has a major issue and that is unless you are Canadian, you have no value to hockey. Wake up and smell the coffee you senile imbecile, in the year 2009, the 2 best players on the planet are Russian, deal with it. Your little bromance with Sidney "I'd much rather cry and complain than actually play hockey" Crosby isn't even the best player on his own team and he isn't even at the same level as AO. Alex is a goal scoring machine that celebrates almost every goal he scores, and celebrates even more when his teammates score. Alex enjoys hockey and shows it. There is nothing wrong with that by any stretch of the imagination. Sid on the other hand, he is a media made drone. He is very robotic in his play. He is very robotic in his interviews. He no longer looks like he enjoys the game at all. Sid, while being a damn good player, fails to do the thing that is the reason the C is on his chest, and that is lead, as well as make the players around him better. Simply put, the Pens are a better team when Sid isn't on the ice, like for the last 3 games. Without Cherry's not so secret lover boy on the ice, the Pens, lead by Evgeni "Geno" Malkin are once again in a playoff spot. Geno is just like AO, he has fun playing the game, constantly has a smile on his face, and most definitely makes the players around him better. Geno doesn't lead the league in points and assists for no reason. He is the consummate team player and does whatever he can to make the players around him succeed. Geno is the true captain of the Pens, Geno should have the C on his chest, and Sid needs to be dealt away from Pittsburgh for the benefit of the Penguins. It's my opinion that getting Sid out of Pittsburgh would help him and the Penguins immensely. He could be his own player if he got away from owner Mario Lemiuex and from Geno. The Phoenix Coyotes are bleeding money and have a tiny fan base. In order to grow that franchise, and to make Pittsburgh a legit Cup contender, a deal like Sidney Crosby and Mark Eaton to the Coyotes for Shane Doan, Olli Jokinen, and Derek Morris would benefit both teams.

btw..here's a link to the wind bag, Don Cherry's comments. Watch the Feb 28th Coach's Corner.

On to the trade deadline. The deadline in the NHL is a little less than 38 hours away. The last 3 years there was an average of 24 deadline moves. So far this year there has been 4 trades already.

What will our incompetent GM do? Doug Risebrough has driven this franchise in the ground with his inability to actually plan for the future, draft well, make trades to subsidize current and future talent, and sign any significant free agents. The Wild have 6 pending free agents, 3 guys on the NHL roster that will be restricted free agents, and castaway Benoit Pouliot in the minors who is also a restricted free agent that can all be traded away, plus aging vets in Owen Nolan and Andrew Brunette, and 3 guys with contracts that could get some value back that serve no real purpose here: Marek Zidlicky, Kim Johnsson, and Pierre-Marc Bouchard.

At the bare minimum, the Wild can not afford to just let Marian Gaborik or Niklas Backstrom walk. A team like the Montreal Canadians would be a great fit for Gaborik and Johnsson. The Wild would very likely be able to get "The Mafia Brothers" Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn in return for that pair, which would be a tremendous boost for the Wild long term, and a great help getting to, and winning in the playoffs for the Canadians. Niklas Backstrom would also be a tremendous fit with the Philadelphia Flyers who are a solid goaltender away from being serious Stanley Cup contender. Wild should expect young forwards Joffrey Lupul and Claude Giroux plus a pick or 2 in return for Nik. Another trade that would make perfect sense for both teams so it will never happen is: Pierre-Marc Bouchard going to the Pittsburgh Penguins for young center Jordan Staal. Bouchard would give the great whiner Crosby another wing to play with along with recently acquired Chris Kunitz from the Anaheim Ducks, while the Wild would get a much needed center they have needed forever. This would also allow James Sheppard to mature at his own pace instead of being rushed by the Wild. Another potential trading partner for the Wild is the Detroit Red Wings. They need a goalie in the worse way and some toughness. Backstrom and Owen Nolan would be tremendous fits there and the Wild could expect pending free agents Johan Franzen or Jiri Hudler in return as part of the deal.

The bottom line is, the 2 best players on the Wild are going to be free agents...Marian Gaborik and Niklas Backstrom. The Wild are completely void of prospects and have no picks due to throwing them away to acquire Marek Zidlicky and Marc-Andre Bergeron this past off season. Doug needs to unload everyone he can, other than Mikko Koivu, Brent Burns, and Cal Clutterbuck, to replenish the franchise with actual top end talent that can make a difference going forward. There is nothing possibly worse than letting Gaborik and Backstrom walk this summer and get nothing for them. It would be the end of this franchise for a half decade. The Wild would be just like the pitiful Toronto Maple Leafs. Nobody in Minnesota wants that.

2 months since last post

been a long time since I put anything here. the reality is, the Wild are a terribly inconsistent team that isn't going to make the playoffs and need to trade away Backstrom, Gaborik, Johnsson, Zidlicky, and Bouchard before the trade deadline. Also, the head coach and GM need to be fired after the season.

The last 2 months, the Wild have been the same all defense, no offense team as they have been all season and there was nothing worth blogging about.

the last week of February, the Wild are on the road for most of the rest of the season, and will nose dive towards the bottom of the Western Conference standings. It's inevitable, it's going to happen, and it's going to be ugly.

4-1 Wild Win over the NY Islanders

In what had to be the most dominating performance of the season, against a bad team, but a game they had to win to keep from completely unraveling, They Wild beat the New York Islanders 4-1 by scoring 4 unanswered goals, 3 of them coming in the 3rd period. Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom was one horrible penalty call away from a shutout. defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron was called for interference when he took an Islander out of the play well after the player had gotten rid of the puck. Then 32 seconds later, Antti Miettinen got called for a hooking that I still haven't found. 9 seconds later, with the 5 on 3 opportunity, former Wild forward, Richard Park, was given a pass by forward Doug Weight across the crease for an easy tap in. Other then a shot that hit the post, that was really the only solid chance the Islanders had to score in the game. Backstrom only faced 16 shots, the lowest the Wild had given up all season.

For the Wild, they had the most shots on net for the team this season with 39. 11 different guys got a point tonight, including rookie Colton Gillies, who got his first NHL goal, which also happened to be the game winning goal. Also chipping in a point for the Wild: Derek Boogaard, Pierre-Marc Bouchard(g), Kim Johnsson, Mikko Koivu(g), Krys Kolanos, Antti Miettinen, Benoit Pouliot, Nick Schultz, James Sheppard, and Stephane Veilleux(g). There were some of the usual spots during the game where the Wild looked like their usual bad self, but for the majority of the game, they took it right to the Islanders. I don't remember the last time the Wild powerplay looked so bad though, or their 5 on 5 was so dominant. Wild came out on a mission and that was to win the game, and they did just that with some excellent hockey. Koivu played 24 1/2 minutes tonight, Gaborik looked good and played 21 1/2 minutes.

Hopefully the Wild build off this game and will put the same pressure on the St. Louis Blues Saturday night. Wild will either face Chris Mason, who has lost his last 6 games, while allowing less then 3 goals only once, or they will face Manny Legace, who is coming off a concussion after getting kneed to the head by Anaheim Duck forward Ryan Carter. Legace has been out 5 games and 2 periods with his concussion. Legace is 9-4-2 against the Wild in his career with a 2.63 gaa and a 89.2 save%. Mason is 2-3-2 against the Wild with a 3.66 gaa and a 83.3 save%. The wild only have 1 game next week due to the NHL Christmas break. Tey have no reason to hold anything back against St. Louis. The game is very winnable if they work for it.

Bottom line, if the Wild play that way every game, they will win most nights. It was a complete team effort.
